I am Pedro Lázaro Rodríguez. I have a Ph.D. in Social Sciences by the University of Granada (Spain) and my research is focused on Information and Scientific Communication. My thesis was on the analysis, evaluation, and the development of tools and methods for the improvement of both public and university libraries.

I work as an Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science at the Complutense University of Madrid. As a researcher, I am a member of INFOBISOC, a research group on Information, Libraries and Society. As well, I collaborate with Secaba Lab (University of Granada) keeping up to date the tool Secaba-Rank that I developed and implemented during my Ph.D.

On the other hand, what I enjoy the most in my day to day is playing to music (guitars and drums), reading and re-reading, hiking, picking mushrooms, campervanning, and especially using FLOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source Software) and leading a vegan life style. In that sense, I volunteer at Fundación Santuario Vegan and I collaborate with the Free Software and Open Technologies Office of the Complutense University of Madrid.

You can find me on ORCID, Google Scholar, Scopus, WOS, Open Science Framework, Figshare, TubEdu, Mastodon (Política ConCiencia and Scholar Social), PixelFed and on my Blog.

Reports:

I have co-authored some reports analyzing the quality of libraries based on LibQUAL and "ad hoc" surveys. We carried out studies for some public and university libraries such as the University of Granada (2017-2018; 2018-2019; 2019-2020), the University of Alcalá (2017 and 2019); the University of Salamanca (2017 and 2019); the public library Jovellanos in Gijón, Asturias, Spain (2017), the Federico Santa María Technical University (2017) or the Catholic University of Argentina (2018).

Projects:

  1. NEW: Impact of Covid-19 on the use of Spanish university libraries during 2020: a web tool for the analysis: the results of an analysis of the impact of Covid-19 on the use of Spanish university libraries during 2020 are presented, taking the use of 2019 as a reference. The results have been published in a web tool that allows deeper analysis of the libraries individually and for the whole of them: https://pedrolr.es/impactocovid19bibuniversitarias2020/
  2. COBib-Públicas is an observatory of public libraries in Spain during the Covid-19 pandemic based on digital news. The project has been published as a web page including digital news on public libraries from January to May 2020. COBib-Públicas is conceived as a place to get information about the Spanish public libraries during the Covid-19 pandemic
  3. Secaba-Rank: Secaba-Rank is an online tool that includes Secaba-Rank Universitarias and Secaba-Rank Publicas, which can be used to evaluate both Spanish university libraries and public reading networks. Using a systemic approach, the methodology makes use of second level indicators focused on efficiency. This methodology facilitates the benchmarking of libraries to find models of good practice in order to improve. Secaba-Rank is an essential tool for decision making by researchers and managers in libraries
  4. Libraries in the electoral programs for the 2016 general elections of Ciudadanos, Unidos Podemos (IU and Podemos), PP and PSOE [Las bibliotecas en los programas electorales para las generales de 2016 de Ciudadanos, Unidos Podemos (IU y Podemos), PP y PSOE]: This web page contains information about libraries in the electoral programs for the general elections of June 26th in Spain in 4 (certainly 5) of the proposals, namely those of Ciudadanos, Unidos Podemos (IU and Podemos), PP and PSOE

Research stays and other merits:

  • 2017: I spent 3 months at Tampere University (Finland) with Pertti Vakkari as my research host. Thanks to this stay with Pertti Vakkari, I learned Regression Analysis and we published a paper entitled "Modelling public library use by library characteristic: a comparative study between Spain and Finland for loans and visits". https://doi.org/10.3989/redc.2018.4.1544
  • 2018: I spent 3 months at University of Amsterdam with Frank Huysmans as my research host. Thanks to Frank Huysmans I learned statistical analysis with R (using RStudio). Since them, it is the software I use for my research. Also, we started a project about latent variable analysis comparing the Spanish, the Dutch and the Finnish public library sistems
  • 2019: I spent 40 days again at Tampere University (Finland) with Pertti Vakkari as my research host. We focused our research on a study entitled: "Library Use, University Resources and Student Quality in Predicting Students’ Academic Performance: The Case of Spanish On-Site Public Universities". It is available as a chapter of my thesis (Chapter 8.1)
  • 2019: I was awarded the prize "Luís de Camões Chair of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid" to the best study by young researchers (under 35 years old) presented as a communication to EDICIC 2019 (Iberian Meeting of the Iberoamerican and Caribbean Association of Education and Research in Information Science)
